Vertical Farming: Higher space & energy utilization way of farming

With increasing and unfulfilled demands of vegetable, colossal stress for feeding the Indian population lies on the shoulders of agriculture researchers. India owns 2.4% of the world’s geographical area and constitutes 16.13% of the world population. Already vast extent of the forest is being converted to agrarian land after independence, even if existing full forest cover (20% of geographical area) is turned into the agrarian land which is not preferable solution won’t be suffice to meet out the food demands. Alternative methods with lesser resource burden and higher productivity are the area of interest of research for agriculture scientist. Greenhouse-based cultivation of vegetables and flowers is the efficient way of growing plants inside the protective as well as the optimal environment with faster growth, higher germination rate & higher yield. Because of the greenhouse it is possible to grow vegetables in winters of the extremely freezing climate at Ladakh. The focus is towards the selection of actuators or system process which harness renewable energy and reduce energy burden on the environment.

Next advancement in the greenhouse is the vertical farming inside the greenhouse. It has become possible because of the hydroponics which is the soilless based cultivation. The plants are arranged in the vertical layers. This arrangement helps in effective utilization of the greenhouse environment for cultivation from the usual practice of soil based cultivation. Hydroponics based cultivation doesn’t require the pesticides & insecticides, hence very well for growing organic vegetables. It’s more efficient way of growing vegetables as it utilizes the whole structure space with higher yield.
